About Brixham
Brixham is a small town, famous for its fishing fleet and port, in
the county of Devon in South West England. It is situated at the
southern end of
Torbay, a large bay known as
The English Riviera which includes Torquay and Paignton.
Though perhaps not as
well known as its two sister towns, which are popular tourist resorts
busy in summer, it has a beautiful setting around an old harbour, some
picturesque views and a rich history. The most famous incidence in its
history was when King William III of Orange landed at Brixham in 1688
before marching onwards to be crowned King of England. But perhaps it
is best known for its fishing fleet and the fish landed there that
finds it way into seafood restaurants the length and breadth of the
country.
The Beam Trawler
was invented in Brixham and the town is still known to this day for
The distinctive Brixham Trawler, some of the old wooden sailing ones
still exist and can be seen and visited in the Marina. Of course the
fleet today is much more up to date and the big trawlers still land
their catch at the port.
There are many
things to see and do in Brixham, the harbour is very pretty and the
cliffs around the harbour rise up very steeply, making a walk around
the harbour a pleasant way to while away an afternoon, and there are
many shops, restaurants and cafes in which to spend some time.
There is also the
seawater pool at Shoalstone so you can go for a swim in the sea, or
you can go for a boat trip from the marina. If you wish to explore
further you can walk over to Berry Head and walk on the cliffs around
an old Napoleonic fort, which has some fantastic views out over the
bay and out to sea.
Brixham is a great
place to explore the wider area and the historic naval town of
Dartmouth is only a few miles away. It is also easy to get to
Dartmoor, or you can go and enjoy the beaches of Paignton and Torquay. There is a
world class Zoo at Paignton, water slides in Goodrington and Torquay
has all the nightlife that anyone could want. All these places are
right on the doorstep.
